Webtoon Must Read – EMPYREA

Way back when during my time at Geek Girl Authority, I ran a column called Saturday Morning Webtoons. Every weekend, I raved about two Webtoon series I was head over heels for. But, like most things, reading took a backseat when I reentered the 9-5 workforce. In my attempt to claw back my free hours, I started going back to the things I enjoyed.

I always loved reading Webtoon series, and this was made even easier when I saw an Instagram post from my favorite fine piece of machinery, OHKATES, sharing that Empyrea was back with a new season. If this series has no fans, then I am dead. This series has been one of my absolute favorites since its official launch on Webtoon Originals back in 2018.

For those who have no idea what I am going on about, Empyrea is a fantasy Webtoon series that follows the stoic knight Hawk and the quirky Princess Kira as they find themselves caught in a deadly plot that, if left unchecked, will tear the realms apart. And we can’t have that happen, right?

Like most nerds, I love a good fantasy series. Now add in a dash of steampunk, a lot of supernatural, hot heroes and villains, and you have yourself a must-read series. But I promise, I’m not just judging a Webtoon by its banner art. Empyrea has been and continues to be an incredible read.

From the very first chapter, OHKATES has expanded on her world, story, and characters in a way that gave me exactly what I wanted but also had me wanting more. It’s a balance that can be hard to find, but when done right, feels great.

What I love about Webtoon series is how they can really be the entire package. Empyrea is brought to life by the incredible artwork and the use of transition scenes to help it flow together in a vertical format. Add in OHKATES’ ability to animate, and it helps bring the story to life.

The only thing I wish is that we got each season faster. But I wholly understand that, in the case of a lot of Webtoon series, this is all the work of one person. As a big believer in taking care of one’s mental health and knowing you can’t fill someone else’s cup if yours is empty, I encourage and understand the need to do so.

For me, it just means I have to wait a bit longer. But it sure does speak volumes about how good the series is if I am willing to keep coming back for more. If you haven’t read the series or didn’t know it was back, now is the time to dive in.
